Organizations and charities are now welcome to apply with Live! Casino Salem to receive charitable funding as the first phase of the project plans to open this summer.

In January, a building permit was issued for the first phase of construction, which will feature a complement of new historical horse racing machines, along with blackjack and poker, food offerings and a full bar.

A work permit for the property was issued by the Town of Salem on Wednesday, May 14, said planning director Jacob LaFontaine.

Pending regulatory approvals, the casino will open this summer and will immediately begin generating tax revenue and donating to qualifying charities, which are recognized by the state as registered nonprofits.

This can include veterans clubs, rotary clubs, hospitals, religious organizations, ASPCAs, homeless shelters and services, schools, DV/SA survivor groups, historical societies, recreational facilities, mental health organizations, youth sports groups and more.

The casino is expected to generate more than $121 million for these organizations during its first 10 years of operation.

“By opening the casino in phases, we can expedite the addition of charitable gaming to the entertainment and tourism assets that Salem has to offer in addition to generating contributions to organizations in need,” said executive vice president Jeff Farve.

“The Rockingham Mall, along with Tuscan Village, already draw visitors from throughout New England, and the addition of Casino Salem will add another dynamic attraction.”

Future phases of the project will include approximately 900 historical horse racing machines, 40 gambling tables, several premier food and beverage concepts, a signature center bar, a sports lounge, golf simulators and similar amenities, special event space and more.

The $200 million project, developed in partnership with Lupoli Companies, Tuscan Brands and Cordish Gaming, is at the former site of the Lord & Taylor department store at the southern side of the mall, which has been mostly vacant since the end of 2020.

The project will revitalize the space and become a world-class gaming, entertainment and dining destination spanning three levels.

If the venue is successful, developers said there could be plans for future expansion that would include a hotel, if the town and the owner of the mall agree.

When the project was being discussed by the Salem Planning Board, residents were outspoken about the level of crime and demand the casino might bring to public safety and surrounding neighborhoods.

Following its approval in November, residents Jamie and Chris Cummings filed an appeal in December against the Town of Salem and the Salem Planning Board, citing concerns over public health and safety, general welfare and the comfort and convenience of the residents in the immediate neighborhoods.

The appeal was withdrawn in February. Eligible charitable organizations can apply for the partnerships at casinosalem.com through May 31.
